Electronic Spreadsheet

Organise data in worksheets, use formulas and functions, format values, apply cell references and create charts that communicate results.

Core ideas

1. Understand the idea

A worksheet has rows, columns and cells. A cell address combines a column letter and row number; a range names a group of cells.

2. Key knowledge

Labels describe data, values hold numbers or dates, and formulas calculate results. Formulas begin with =.

3. Apply it

Functions such as SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and COUNT process a range of values. Check the selected range before trusting a result.

4. Remember the process

Relative references adjust when a formula is copied; absolute references stay fixed; mixed references lock only a row or column.

5. Use it responsibly

Charts represent patterns; choose a chart that fits the data and label it clearly.

Worked scenario

If marks are in C2:C6, use =SUM(C2:C6) for the total and =AVERAGE(C2:C6) for the mean. In a copied formula, a relative reference can shift; use an absolute reference such as $F$1 when a tax or rate cell must stay fixed.

Practice questions with answers

1. What does the cell range B2:B8 mean?
The cells from B2 through B8 in column B.
2. Why use an absolute reference?
It keeps a referenced cell fixed when a formula is copied to another location.

Practical evidence

Keep a small practical record: task, tool, steps, result and one learning. For technical units, repeat the operation with a new file or data set so you can explain what changes and what stays the same.
