Communication Skills–I

Communication is the exchange of ideas, information and feelings. This unit develops clear listening, speaking, reading and writing in everyday and workplace situations.

Core ideas

1. Understand the idea

The communication cycle includes a sender, message, channel, receiver and feedback. Noise or barriers can affect the message.

2. Key knowledge

Verbal communication uses spoken or written words; non-verbal communication includes facial expression, posture, gesture and eye contact.

3. Apply it

Good listening includes attention, patience, clarifying questions and a response that shows understanding.

4. Remember the process

Clear messages use a suitable tone, simple structure and language appropriate to the audience and purpose.

Worked scenario

If a group assignment deadline is unclear, a useful response is to restate the date and deliverable, ask a focused question and confirm the plan in writing.

Practice questions with answers

1. What is feedback in communication?
Feedback is the receiver’s response. It helps the sender understand whether the message was received and understood.
2. Give one example of a communication barrier.
Background noise can make spoken instructions difficult to hear; unfamiliar vocabulary can also prevent understanding.

Practical evidence

Keep a small practical record: task, tool, steps, result and one learning. For technical units, repeat the operation with a new file or data set so you can explain what changes and what stays the same.
