ICT Skills–I

Information and Communication Technology skills help students use digital devices and applications responsibly to create, store, find and communicate information.

Core ideas

1. Understand the idea

Identify common hardware such as a computer, phone, keyboard, mouse, monitor and printer, and common software such as an operating system and applications.

2. Key knowledge

Use files and folders with meaningful names; save work in the intended location and maintain a backup when appropriate.

3. Apply it

Basic device care includes keeping equipment dry and ventilated, handling cables safely and using approved shutdown procedures.

4. Remember the process

Use the internet thoughtfully: check the source, protect personal information and follow copyright and school rules.

Worked scenario

For a project, create a folder named “Science_Project”, save the report and images with descriptive filenames, and keep a second copy in a teacher-approved location.

Practice questions with answers

1. What is the difference between hardware and software?
Hardware is the physical equipment; software is the set of programs and instructions used by the device.
2. Why are clear filenames useful?
They make files easier to locate, identify and organise, especially when several versions exist.

Practical evidence

Keep a small practical record: task, tool, steps, result and one learning. For technical units, repeat the operation with a new file or data set so you can explain what changes and what stays the same.
