Question 1

Which detail would best support the inference that a character is afraid: a repeated hesitation or a confident announcement?

Repeated hesitation is stronger evidence of fear because it shows uncertainty in action. A confident announcement points in the opposite direction unless later events contradict it.

Question 2

Join the sentences with “when”: The clouds grew dark. The pilot checked his instruments.

When the clouds grew dark, the pilot checked his instruments. The clause introduced by “when” gives the time of the action.

Question 3

How can a writer create suspense without revealing the ending?

A writer can limit what the reader knows, introduce a problem, use short details about danger and delay the explanation of an unusual event.
