First read the poem aloud, then annotate key images, repeated words, contrasts and the speaker’s attitude. These notes are a guide to interpretation; your evidence should come from the lines in your own textbook.

How to analyse the poem

  1. Identify the speaker and situation. Ask who is speaking and what prompts the reflection.
  2. Follow the development. Note how images or ideas build from the opening to the ending.
  3. Explain the language. Notice imperative verbs, repeated phrases and changes in tone. Connect each choice to how the poem encourages its reader.
  4. State a supported theme. Use a detail from the poem and explain how it supports your reading.

Important question answers

1. Does believing in yourself mean success is automatic?
No. In the poem’s motivational context, self-belief supports effort and persistence. It helps a person continue working through difficulty; it does not replace practice or planning.
2. How does the poem address its reader?
Its direct, encouraging voice speaks to the reader personally. This makes the advice feel immediate and invites the reader to apply it to a real goal.

Exam-ready response method

For a 40–50 word response, begin with a direct answer, use one precise textual detail, and explain its effect. For a longer response, organise the interpretation around two or three connected ideas. Paraphrase the poem; do not reproduce long passages.

Self-check: Does my answer explain how the poet creates meaning, or does it only retell what happens?

Quick revision checklist

Notebook activity: Make a two-column chart: “text detail” and “what it suggests.” Use at least three details from the prescribed poem.
