• Congress opposed the theory, but political developments and British involvement led to Partition.

Process of Partition

• Principle of religious majorities: Muslim-majority areas formed Pakistan; others remained in India.
• Challenges:
  • No single Muslim-majority belt; two separate regions (West and East Pakistan) were created, separated by Indian territory.

Mahatma Gandhi's Role

• Gandhi did not celebrate Independence Day on 15 August 1947; he was in Kolkata addressing communal riots.
• Saddened by the failure of ahimsa and satyagraha to prevent violence.
• Efforts in Kolkata:
  • Persuaded Hindus and Muslims to stop violence, leading to communal harmony celebrations.
  • Prayer meetings attracted large crowds, but riots resumed, prompting a fast.
• In Delhi (1948):
