Nationalism

Concepts · examples · revision

Core idea

Nationalism links political claims to a sense of shared national identity. It has supported self-determination and anti-colonial movements, but can also be used to exclude minorities. Distinguish civic and cultural claims and assess whether political unity respects plural identities.

Key terms

nation; self-determination; national identity; pluralism

How to build an answer

Define the concept, state the principle or argument, apply it to a concrete example and consider a limitation or competing claim. Use examples to clarify the concept, not to replace reasoning.

Practice

  1. How can a national movement build solidarity while respecting internal diversity?
  2. Give a real or hypothetical example that illustrates the concept.
  3. State one reasonable objection or limitation and explain how you would respond.
