Chapter-by-chapter notes
The CBSE course includes five theory units and practical assessment. The chapter sequence below follows the official Class XI curriculum; school plans may organise teaching differently.
Official CBSE Home Science curriculum (PDF)Home Science as an interdisciplinary field
Home Science brings together knowledge about people, food, health, textiles, resources and family life. It supports informed everyday decisions and includes varied higher-study and career pathways.
Check: Name two areas of Home Science and describe how they connect to daily life.
Self and identity
Explore what contributes to a sense of self, development and characteristics of the self, and influences on identity. Identity develops through interaction between individual experience and social contexts; it is not explained by one factor alone.
Food, nutrition, health and fitness
Connect nutrients, food choices, health and physical activity with adolescent needs. Use balanced, evidence-based explanations rather than one-food “cures.”
Management of resources
Plan the use of time, energy, money and other resources by identifying goals, constraints and alternatives.
Fabric around us
Relate fibre and fabric properties to use, comfort, care and sustainability.
Media and communication technology
Consider how media and digital tools shape communication, information access and everyday decisions.
Needs in diverse contexts
Study nutrition, health and hygiene alongside availability and management of resources. Needs and solutions vary with age, access, culture and local conditions; thoughtful planning starts with context.
Check: Suggest a community health-information activity and explain how you would make it accessible.
Nutrition, health and well-being
Understand how nutrition, health, care and environments support development during childhood. Link concepts to age-appropriate needs and recognise that well-being includes physical and social conditions.
Our apparel
Examine clothing needs, fabric choices, comfort, safety and the influence of environment and activity.
Financial management and planning
Set goals, prepare a budget, compare needs and wants, and plan for changing circumstances. A budget is a decision tool, not merely a list of expenses.
Care and maintenance of fabrics
Use fabric properties and care labels to choose suitable washing, drying, ironing and storage practices.
Practical learning and revision
Practical work applies concepts through activities such as planning a budget or time plan, investigating fibre properties, preparing a care label, and maintaining a record file. Follow school safety and assessment instructions.
- Explain how identity can be influenced by both personal and social factors.
- Compare a food choice using nutritional need, access and context.
- Build a simple weekly budget and justify the priorities.
