Entrepreneurship: Concept and Functions
Entrepreneurship recognises an opportunity and organises resources under uncertainty to create value. Functions include innovation, coordination and risk-bearing. It can contribute to development, but success is never guaranteed.
An Entrepreneur
An entrepreneur recognises opportunities, makes decisions under uncertainty and mobilises resources. Study competencies, values, ethics and intrapreneurship; do not reduce entrepreneurship to personality traits.
Entrepreneurial Journey
A venture journey moves from opportunity recognition and idea screening through feasibility, planning, resource arrangement, launch and learning. Feedback can change the model; test assumptions before committing resources.
Entrepreneurship as Innovation and Problem Solving
Innovation applies a new or improved idea to solve a problem. Use observation, customer evidence, prototypes and feedback. Social entrepreneurship considers social value as well as operational viability.
Understanding the Market
Market understanding analyses customers, competitors, environment and evidence. Define a target segment, value proposition and marketing mix, and test demand instead of assuming it.
Business Finance and Arithmetic
Separate fixed and variable costs, revenue, contribution and break-even. Contribution per unit=selling price−variable cost. Break-even quantity=fixed costs÷contribution per unit, assuming stable prices and costs within the range.
Resource Mobilization
A venture mobilises human, physical, financial, intellectual and social resources. Compare funding by cost, control, risk and timing; align resources with venture milestones.
